Puppy, our oldest heifer was very sad and cried most of the day.

For those of you not familiar with cows...I mean she mooed and carried on most of the day. She thinks the little ones are hers and when we take them somewhere, try to give them shots, etc...she doesn't appreciate it. Other than that she's the sweetest cow in the world, as loving as a dog, but mess with her "babies" and she comes unglued.

Last night when the children finally made it home, she was so happy. She had to smell them and check them out then she gave one final loud moo (a happy one this time) and all was quiet.

Hopefully I'll get some pictures of the de-horned babies so everyone can see what this looks like. Stitches on a cow's head are just funny to me. Telly (the little jersey) was cosmetically de-horned instead of just having hers burned off. We did this because she is a show cow and it will look better later. For the record (as if anyone cares...) Jersey's can keep their horns or be de-horned, however, if I'm messing with a cow, we're taking off the horns. I've had one too many in my backside to leave them on.

So that's the cow low-down. Now that things are slowing down on the cow-front, does anyone have any good book suggestions???

No, I'm not dead, thanks for asking.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SkaS8PJl48w/TnUrYA9wUKI/AAAAAAAAAEM/ihrYW-nKv3g/s320/IMG_0670.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653472598809399458" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6noWxYfLeC0/TnUrXzso9nI/AAAAAAAAAEE/2T6VkPHrvhc/s320/IMG_0662.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653472595247953522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nohV9ePB9jI/TnUqY3pqphI/AAAAAAAAAD8/4sAneoidyy0/s320/IMG_0655.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653471513977464338" />
I have just been CRAZY this whole summer! We stayed home, cleaned house, did laundry...fun times.

Yesterday was crazy errand day. We went to the eye doctor, the county assessor's office, shopping for the perfect Easter dress and the ever elusive oxford-style tap shoes for dance recital in May. Eventually found the perfect Easter dress but alas, the tap shoes were not to be had.

I'm going to take a moment here to discuss the Easter dress situation. How many of you have shopped for a 10 year old girl? Have you seen the clothes available for said age of child??? Somewhere along the way I must have missed that I was supposed to be dressing my child like a hoochie. Seriously. It's ridiculous. I know I cannot be the only person who has this problem. For the record (and because I figure they deserve the plug since they had NICE, PRETTY, AGE-APPROPRIATE dresses...because trust me, they don't know I exist so are not paying for this comment) DILLARD'S had wonderful dresses. In fact, we found 2 there that we loved and actually had to make a choice. Thank you Dillard's for having children's clothing that looks like it belongs on children.

That said, today was clean up the barnyard day. And I'm thrilled to say it didn't take as long as I thought it might. Which means (since I had marked off today and tomorrow for that) TOMORROW is a do nothing day!!! YAY! I love days that I have nothing planned and can just do whatever. I can't wait!

OH! This NEVER happened when I went to school. This is the 2nd time in 3 years this has happened to me now. What gives? AHHH fun times.

More snow!

So, now I'll be in school until July. The current temperature is -4. Yes dear friends, that's a negative 4.

We probably have a grand total of 24 inches of snow, give or take a few. We haven't been in school the entire month of February. I am so not looking forward to having to be in school most of the summer. With my job, I'm there 10 days after the teachers leave (who are usually there 1 or 2 days after students) and I start 10 days before the teachers start (once again 1 or 2 days before students). At this point, it's looking like I may get a week off this summer. I know there are those of you out there who are thinking "but you get summers off". Yes, I do, but I don't get days throughout the school year. Most employees in the world of work give you 2 weeks of annual leave a year and somewhere around 12 sick days??? I get 10 sick days a year, 2 personal days and 1 emergency day. So the fact that I have 4 weeks for summer (keep in mind I'm there 10 days after and 10 days before teachers) means that basically, I'm no different from someone in the private sector. Not to mention all the times I get called in to do something throughout the summer. It was WAY better last summer, but the previous summer, it was insane. I was called every day to come do something at the school.

OK, enough griping. Thanks for listening. I'm just bummed that my days off are being spent cooped up inside my house instead of out by the pool.

It probably won't be as bad as I'm making it out to be. I know we still have some built-in snow days in the calendar AND they could always take away some (or all) of Spring Break. Since I don't have Spring Break plans, I don't mind.

The good news is my laundry is caught up and I've read several books. I've also been playing Dancing with the Stars on the Wii. So maybe it hasn't been that bad...

Snow day!

So, we have "blizzard" conditions.

Well, here's what I know. I went out to feed the cows this morning. I walked out to the gate and couldn't open it because the latch was frozen. So, I turn around to come back in the house to nuke a mug of water to go warm up the metal so I can open the gate and I COULD NOT SEE ALL MY FOOTPRINTS!!!! That's right! I could see a vague outline of where they were...we're talking less than 5 minutes folks. CRAZY!

If I get energized, you might get some pix later of the snow. I liked these books. No, they didn't make it to the top of my list, because I liked the others better. BUT I thoroughly enjoyed these books. The first one moved a little slow in the beginning, and in the third there were so many people I was having trouble keeping them all straight. But I liked them, I just liked others more. I just wanted to clear that up in case anyone was wondering....

Books I've Read since October

My last post over what I was reading was in October, so I'm going to start where I left off and give you the run down of what I read.

The Thorn by: Beverly Lewis
Deceit by: Brandilyn Collins
Suite Scarlett by: Maureen Johnson
Dead of Night by: Brandilyn Collins
Burn by: Suzanne Phillips
The Hunger Games by: Suzanne Collins
The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by: Stieg Larsson
Catching Fire by: Suzanne Collins
Keeping the “little” in your Girl by: Dannah Gresh
Mockingjay by: Suzanne Collins
Sweet By and By by: Sara Evans
What I Saw and How I Lied by: Judy Blundell
8 Habits of the Heart for Educators by: Clifton Taulbert
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by: David Sedaris
Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by: Rhoda Janzen
A Great and Terrible Beauty by: Libba Bray

As you can tell (or if you read on the rare occasions I post) I read a wide variety of books. All of these were good. I will say the book "What I Saw and How I Lied" was slower moving than I thought it would be, and with the title, you would think the lie would be apparent early on...but it isn't. The lie comes in almost at the end of the book. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, it just wasn't exactly what I thought it would be.

Reading update

Well, today is Jan. 1 so this means my reading for 2010 is complete. This year I read 79 books. Yep, that's right...79. So, I'm thinking my reading goal for 2011 should be 85. Later I will post the list of books that rounded out the year, but for now, I believe I will choose my favorite book of the year.

OH MY! After reviewing my list of reads, I cannot pick ONE. It's going to come down to two SERIES of books. Both (coincidentally) Young Adult series.

The first "set", is Graceling and it's companion book Fire by Kristin Cashore. If you are a fan of young adult books and you have not read these, you are missing out. AMAZING books. I cannot wait for the third Bitterblue to come out. READ THESE!

The second is an actual series. I will say that whenever I describe these books to someone I always get a look like I've lost my mind. I'll admit, the premise of the books threw me off for a while as well, but read the first one and you will be HOOKED! They are amazing. So, the moment you've been waiting for: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I will say the third book in the series was my least favorite, but they were so good and ended the way I wanted it to end. I'm sure there has been a lot happen, but it's gone so fast I don't know what it was.

My daughter is in a play with the local community playmakers. That's been crazy. The play started last week and goes through next week, so that's a good thing. It's just so hard to clean house when I'm never here!!! Does anyone else have this problem?? I used to be so good about using the flylady method, but here in the last year or so I've totally slacked. It coincides with the state teacher's meetings and the end of the first 9 weeks. It's only 3 days, but it's just nice to get a little break.

Today I was going to have a yard sale, but there were some technical difficulties in getting the tables and such, so I've put it off until next week. This also gives me more time to get my stuff together...and believe me I have STUFF! I'll be so glad to see it go. I went to storage yesterday (yes, I have a storage unit...more on that later) and pulled out a BUNCH of stuff that can bless some other people.

So, I have a storage unit. I've had it for a couple of years now, and yes, it is something I always thought was crazy for people to have. However, it had gotten to the point in our house that something was going to have to happen and it was either going to be rent a storage unit for $25 a month or go on medication which I figured would cost me about the same or more. You just can't imagine how all this stuff bothers someone who is claustrophobic (like me!). So, I rented a storage unit and started boxing up stuff. The primary definition of "stuff" being "toys my daughter doesn't play with". She was ok with me boxing it up and taking it to storage, because she knew if she needed something, we could get it back. We've only taken 2 or 3 things back out of storage in the 2-3 years I've had the storage unit. AND the other good part has been we've been able to sort through a lot of it and donate it or sell it. So, there is progress being made. It's slow, but it's progress all the same.

To update on the book situation, since this is one of the continual things I blog about and I know you want to know what I'm reading or your life will not be complete; here are the three (yes, only three so far) books I have read for the month of October:

1. House Rules by Jodi Picoult. You know I love Jodi Picoult if you've read my blog previously. This book was difficult to read. I typically finish a Jodi Picoult book in 2 days. This one took me 2-3 weeks. It was just a difficult read, which I'm thinking is because the main character has Asperger's and that is such a difficult diagnosis to understand. I will say this, I did not like the end of the book. I usually like her books because of the twist at the end that I don't ever see coming, but I knew where this was headed the entire time and then the end just seemed to end abruptly.

2. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. Yes, I read a children's book. However, this is one of my all-time favorite books. I read it (which is actually a re-read of it) because my daughter just finished reading it in school. This is one of the first books that I remember reading that truly spoke to me, it wasn't just fluffy fiction, it was amazing. And it's such a girl power book! I have bought this book for girls in my family when they are in 5th grade because it made such an impression on me. I'm happy to report that even though I am no longer a 10 year old girl, this book is still wonderful!

3. Fancy White Trash by Marjetta Geerling. How would it not be possible to like a book with this title? This just cracked me up! This is a YA book and is one of the nominees for the Oklahoma Sequoyah Book Award. The book was super-cute. Not a lot of intrigue, but it is YA fiction, so how much intrigue do you want? The premise is basically a high school girl who doesn't want to be like the rest of her "white trash" family. Her oldest sister has a baby, her middle sister is pregnant, her mom is pregnant by the same man who impregnated her middle sister and life is crazy. I laughed my way through it. Such a cute, fun read.

That's it for now. Have a GREAT fall break (even if you aren't in Oklahoma!)

I'm not dead, it just feels that way

So I know it's been an eternity since my last entry. I realize this. Everyday I think, I'll blog today...then I don't.

All I can say in my defense is IT HAS BEEN CRAZY HERE!

For the last few weeks I have barely even been home in the evenings. This weekend we were gone Friday night, all day Saturday, Sunday we went to church and then had a meeting after church came home, tossed in some laundry (because hey-you have to have some clean clothes) and then back to church we went! Returned home in time to get clothes out and ready for Monday, hop in bed and start the week. CRAZY I tell you!

Sadly, I'm pretty sure this weekend is looking very similar.

Today I got to come home after work. YAY me! I cleaned out the car, I'm doing laundry as we speak (type..??) I've started dinner and later I plan on cleaning the living room. It would be really nice if I could see the top of the coffee table. Does anyone else use their coffee table as a drop off point for everything? Seriously, it seems like everything lands there! Mail, books, toys, candy, the random glass, etc.

Also on my list of things to do are to post some things to sell on ebay. Yes, I'm an ebay fanatic (as both buyer and seller). This sell will be part of my homework for Financial Peace University. If you aren't familiar with Dave Ramsey, check out the Financial Peace website. This is what has been taking up our Sunday evenings, and let me add I have learned A LOT! No matter what your financial situation there is something for everyone to learn.

Hopefully I'll be a little more on the ball. I'm not making any kind of promise here, but one can always hope.......

Reading a new blog

So I found a new-to-me blog. Savin'Some is a fun place to check out! Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as previous first days of school. The students this year, seem to be able to READ the sign that says NO SCHEDULE CHANGES and believe it or not, have not asked to change anything unless it's been necessary ("I'm not in an English class...can I get that changed?").

So, I survived the day...now I can only hope to survive tomorrow. FRIDAY the 13th??? The second day of school??? AND I have a doctor's appointment. I typically aim for 100 but was continually falling short of that goal, so instead of getting frustrated, this year I set my goal at 75. To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to make it. It seems like this year has left me with little reading time. I'll admit that's very strange, since I generally have a book with me at all times...you never know when you will have to wait somewhere and you might as well be prepared.

This morning I counted up my July reading and I have read (insert drum roll here) 12 books in July! For a total year (to date) of 55! This means, I am only 20 books away from meeting my goal!!! This means for the remainder of the year, I only have to read 4 books per month.

So, I know you're DYING to know what I finished up my month with, so here's the final list of books from July:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by: Stieg Larsson. I'm sure you've heard of this one. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. I started it FOREVER ago and read several other books while I was reading it. I was about half-way through before it seemed to really pick up and move for me. BUT, I will say this: once it started moving, it moved FAST. I think I finished the second half of the book in one day.

Dead in the Family by: Charlaine Harris. I love Charlaine (which you already know). I love the True Blood series (of which this is one). This book did not disappoint.

Ice Cold by: Tess Gerritsen. I'm a HUGE Rizzoli and Isles fan However, I did not know that the television series was based on a book series. So I had to read one. It was GREAT!

Salem Falls by: Jodi Picoult. I absolutely love Jodi Picoult. Her books get me every time. This was no exception. A great book, very well written, with that little twist at the end. I will say, I saw the twist coming this time, but still a good read.

So there you have it. Happy Reading!

Changes Changes Everywhere

Now I've made a couple of changes in one day! I'll admit, that many little bitties gives me the willies....but I know certain people feel the same about high school kiddos.

And of course, I am a weirdo who loves going through the aisles of school supplies to check out the new notebooks and other things that are out there. Of course, I always have to get me a new supply of fine point pens!

Anyway, that said, I'm participating in the Elmer's Glue Bag it Forward Program. I'm donating my bag to my sister, because I'm sure Pre-K needs it!

Here is the info from that site:
Elmer’s will donate up to $10,000 to Adopt-A-Classroom with your participation. I decided that I will add some things I cook to my blog, in an effort to liven it up a little.

Tonight for dinner I am making a concoction I invented in my head at church on Sunday. I know how bad that sounds, but I was thinking of food because I was starving and thought this up. I don't want to give the impression that I was not listening to the sermon, because I was. I had been thinking of food on my way to church and this just kind of came together in my head between the time I got there, Sunday School, Church and then lunch afterward.

So, what is on the menu for tonight? The main course is the master creation. I make a salad dressing that is absolutely wonderful. I'll post the recipe for all of this later...but for now, the main ingredients in the dressing are honey, cinnamon, limes, ginger and EVOO. I made the dressing first thing this morning and currently have some chicken breasts marinating in it as I type. The chicken will be grilled, then topped with a fruit salsa that I also made this morning, consisting of pineapple, mango, strawberries, red onions and a jalapeno. I will keep you posted and if I can get my act together I'll even add pictures.

Let the Happy Dance begin!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 105px; height: 101px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_M8tlabpGOes/TEWrPoXAlTI/AAAAAAAAACw/i1LrmQ7Fl5I/s320/index.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495987205295871282" />

Yay! The 3rd book (the 2nd listed) "An Ice Cold Grave" was my favorite of the series. I'm assuming it's over because of the way "Grave Secret" tied up several loose ends. I was sad to say good-bye (or what I'm perceiving as goodbye to Harper and Tolliver.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by: Stieg Larsson. This book took a while to get going. And by a while I mean until a little more than half-way through the book. If you read the reviews on Amazon, there are a couple where people stay "stick with it" so I guess I should have been forewarned. I REALLY liked this book, AFTER it began to pick up. It took me quite a while to get to the point where this book was all I read. I have been reading it (and other books at the same time) since the beginning of July. It's not typical for me to read more than 1 book at a time, but sometimes if they are slow I just have to. However, once I read only this book, it still took me 6 days to finish...which I'm contributing to the slowness of the beginning, seeing as how I generally finish a book in 2 days. (I finished the final Harry Potter in 1). If you've read "The Host"by Stephenie Meyers, you understand that you just have to stick with it. So, with that in mind, I've rambled enough and I'll say this book was good and I have requested the second one from the library. I would love to see the movie, but I think the closest it is coming to me is about 90 miles away...not sure if I'll be THAT dedicated. It may be one I watch through my good friend BLOCKBUSTER.

SERIOUSLY???

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M8tlabpGOes/TESFiNUdeFI/AAAAAAAAACo/MF7LwBJdT6k/s320/charlie-brown-argh.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495664268036372562" />

I had written out a LONG post and then I evidently had a moment of temporary insanity, because then next thing I new, I had highlighted the entire text and accidentally hit delete.

This is tribute to how I feel.

Updated Reading List

So far in the month of July I have read 5 books. If you are not familiar with her books she writes christian suspense novels. I began reading them because I thought that was an odd combination. Wonderful author!

Impossible by: Nancy Werlin This is a young adult book that I just grabbed in the library because I thought it looked interesting. WOW. Great book.

The Telling by: Beverly Lewis This is the 3rd book in the Seasons of Grace series. I will say I saw what was coming, but the getting there was still worth it. I love her books.

Grave Sight by: Charlaine Harris. I read this because I enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse series and the Shakespeare series. This is GREAT! Harper Connelly is someone you like. I've requested the rest of the series from the library.

Sizzling Sixteen by: Janet Evanovich. Since finishing that, I have read:
Alice in Wonderland by: Lewis Carroll
Through the Looking Glass by: Lewis Carroll
The witch of Blackbird Pond by: Elizabeth George Speare
Horseradish: Bitter truths by: Lemony Snicket
Something More by: Janet Dailey
Extreme Justice by William Bernhart
To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee
Life of Pi by: Yann Martel
Cursed by: Carol Higgins Clark
Wrecked by: Carol Higgins Clark
Shakespeare’s Counselor by: Charlaine Harris

That makes a grand total of 32 books read so far this year. In the past, I have tried to read 100 books a year, and have come close, but never made it all the way to my goal. This year, my goal is 75 books. I have 43 left to go by the end of the year.

As you can tell by looking at my list, any book is fair game: fiction, suspense, young adult, it does not matter to me.

Research and Surprises

Well, I survived church camp with the little children...and yes, they all survived as well.

Today I have been researching a couple of things and if ANYONE out there is reading this and has some ideas, send them my way! Is there anything original out there to be made with polar fleece?

While researching that I found pillowcase dresses. SO CUTE! Hopefully, I'll finish the book I'm reading today and then I'll update on where I am in my book reading for the year.

Let's talk Breast Cancer

Some of you may have noticed that yesterday I added a button (over on the right) to click to go to the breast cancer site.

Let me take some time here to put in a plug for them. The Breast Cancer Site is a website that you go to every day and click on a BIG button. In turn, sponsors of the site will donate mammograms to women who cannot afford them. I have clicked on this site (not always daily, but close to it) for probably 7 or 8 years now. There are several other places you can visit on the site and they will donate accordingly: Literacy, Animal Rescue, Rainforest, Child Health and Hunger.

They have items you can buy (some of which help women who have been involved in the sex trade and are trying to provide for themselves). I have purchased several items over the years from this site and have given them for everything from Christmas gifts, to graduation gifts. I have never been disappointed in the quality of the items.

So, I'm asking any and all of you out there to support this website. If you want to support a worthy cause, it doesn't take much time to go to the website and click a button. Shop around while you're there! A portion of each item sold goes to support a worthy cause (it will tell you if it's going to mammograms, saving horses, rainforest, or whatever).

Changing it up!

I'm working on some new backgrounds, styles for my blog. Let me know if you're alive and kicking out there and if there's something you like or dislike.

It's been crazy so far. Finally finished up at work and have a few weeks off. Went to Branson, MO with my Mom, 1 sister and my daughter. We had a GREAT time. Saw Shepherd of the Hills (BTW one of my FAVE books), went to Silver Dollar City, shopped, went to the Branson Variety Theater to see "Broadway!"...a really fun show. A good time was had by all and we managed to miss the rain.

We came home from that trip, were home one full day and then packed up to go to St. Louis, MO for my daughter's bday present. Her bday was in April, but her "present" was on Saturday. Tickets to see Wicked at the Fabulous Fox theatre!!! What fun! If you haven't seen Wicked, it's a WONDERFUL show. Such fun!

Later this week we'll be attending church camp...what a summer! Today we're staying at home. One of the few days I imagine.

School's OUT!

YAY, let summer begin!
My last day was yesterday. Am I finished? Of course not! But I'm going to have to sneak back to school to finish up. I went in today to do 3 (count them, 3) things and finished 1, yes, only 1, because of phone calls and people stopping by. These 3 things should have taken less than an hour, in an hour and a half I finished 1!!! It's insanity. So my plan is to go in the dead of night, when no one would suspect I will be there.....{evil laugh here}.

So, in honor of summer, I promise to blog. Gee, what a miracle that would be. I also promise to update the looks of my blog. That would be miracle #2. So, keep stopping by and maybe you'll start seeing some changes.

In the meantime I've been reading some WONDERFUL blogs, so check out my list of blogs I follow, or scroll down for buttons.

Crazy times!

So, it's been an eternity since my last blog entry...well okay, a month and a half.

In that time I have finished the following books:

FIRE by Kristin Cashore. Jeez I love this woman! LOVE HER! I loved her first book Graceling (look around my site to see my review) and this one was just as amazing. I cannot wait for Bitterblue (her next book). Her writing is amazing, the characters are amazing. I love Po! He's amazing. I wish I had her imagination.

HUSH HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick. This was recommended to me by one of the senior girls at the high school where I work. AMAZING. So good. Coincidentally, it's the same young lady who suggested I read Graceling (see above). Let's just say, she's a chick who knows her books. This book was good and what I rather enjoyed was she loaned me her book minus the book jacket. SO I had absolutely no clue what I was getting in to when I started reading it. I wasn't sure if some of the characters were supposed to be good or evil. What a great read!

SPLENDOR by Anna Godbersen. Anna, Anna, Anna. Seriously? I have totally ADORED the LUXE series of books. UNTIL THIS ONE! ~Spoiler Alert~! The ending is a bunch of CRAP! NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE who has cut off her hair to look like a man and join the Army, followed a man to Cuba, told him she would live as his mistress would then turn down the marriage proposal when he was free because she didn't want the gossipy women to TALK? SERIOUSLY? Here's a news flash..they were already talking! I wanted to throw this book across the room when I finished it. I don't have to have a happy ending but I don't appreciate a crap ending either.

AMERICAN DESTINY by Janet Dailey. I'm always a fool for a Janet Dailey book. This is GREAT! Although, people don't get naked as much as they do in a typical Dailey book. In fact, the main characters NEVER got naked. But that's okay. The storyline, the history...maybe it's because I live in Oklahoma and I am very familiar with the Cherokee Nation, who knows? But this was a great book.

AMERICAN DREAMS by Janet Dailey. Another great book. Sadly, I got confused and read them in the order they are written here when in actuality this book should be read first. While I loved this book, it was a little difficult to read because I knew what was going to happen in the end. But it was wonderful. Kudos Janet!

DEAD WITCH WALKING by Kim Harrison. This one I liked at times, I didn't at times. It was good, it was confusing. I'm not sure I caught on to everything that was supposed to be going on. I just can't truly decide if I liked it enough to try another book in the series or if this one was enough. If there are any readers out there who have an opinion, PLEASE share.

So, that's my month and a half. Also had my sweet baby's 10th (yes 10!) birthday party. But that's a post for another day.

2 books/2 days

I finished Rhett Butler's People by Daniel McCaig yesterday morning. It was good. Out of 5 stars, I'll give it 4. Some of it was just too much information that I didn't personally feel needed to be told, since they weren't main characters of either book. I believe some of it could have been omitted and not taken away anything from the book. But of course, that's just my opinion. I will say I felt it stayed truer to the characters of Rhett and Scarlett than the book Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley.

After I finished it, I began reading Heat Wave by Richard Castle. For any of you who are fans of the ABC television series, CASTLE, you will know this book. If you are not familiar with the show, let me take a time out here to comment on that. CASTLE is about a writer who is following a cop on her job to "get the inside scoop". The show is hilarious. It's one of my "must-sees" Richard Castle (the character) wrote this book as the first in his series with his cop heroine, Nikki Heat. The book is great. Now, by that, I don't mean that's it's great literature, but it's a great, fun read.

We're coming up on summer. Time to take a look at those summer reading lists. Keep a hold of your list...I might be asking for suggestions later.

The DREADED week

Here it is class of 1988, the week we turn...{gasp} 40!

Some of our fellow classmates have already taken that plunge: Heather, Jeannie, Kenny.

Now, THIS WEEK, we have Charlie, Me and Lea Ann.

Mikey pointed out to me a couple of weeks ago that he and Carla will be the last ones in our class to make the big jump. I absolutely LOVE the Stephanie Plum series. She reminds me so much of myself (well...if I was a bounty hunter and lived in Trenton). This one was...OK. It was good, but not the usual hilarious read. I can generally get through a Plum novel in a day. This took a couple of weeks. It just wasn't the first thing I'd grab when I sat down.

So, for all you Plum-lovers out there. If you haven't read this one, it's a good one. But be prepared to not laugh as much as you usually do.

Happy Reading!

SHIVER!

I finished the book "Shiver" by Maggie Stiefvater yesterday. It's a young adult book about a girl who falls in love with a werewolf...yes, you read that right. The book was good. There was a period of time that it sort of dragged, but on the whole, I'll give it an A-. I will read the second book, due out in July I believe.

I have now begun reading "Rhett Butler's People" by Donald McCraig. I'm about at Chapter 4. It's picked up the pace a little now, so hopefully it won't take me too long to read. As some of you may know, I'm a fairly fast reader (I can read a Harry Potter book in a day) so if it takes me a while to get through a book that's usually a sign that it's a slow mover. So far, I'm pretty happy with Rhett Butler's People. I'm hoping there's a good ending. I love Rhett and Scarlett, loved Gone With the Wind, liked Scarlett (there were some things in there that I did not think MY Scarlett would have done), so I'm hopeful that this book will not disappoint.

In other news, for those of you who started reading this blog because it was started for our class, I believe Kenny had a birthday extravaganza this past weekend. I'll try to get the scoop and report any news!

Graceling=Amazing!

I finished Graceling (which as you will recall I purchased on Wednesday evening).

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! I want to be a Graceling! I'm not sure what powers I want yet, but I want powers! Kristin Cashore, I cannot WAIT for more books from you. I'm dying now to read the second book, Fire. Until then, I may just have to re-read Graceling.

I love it when books are so good you don't mind reading them again. Some of my favorite books to re-read are the Harry Potter series (of course!) and the Twilight series. Another all-time favorite is East by Edith Pattou...if you haven't read it, READ IT! Now, I'm happy to add Graceling to the list. Thank you, thank you Kristin Cashore for writing such a wonderful young adult book!

Kudos Kristin Hannah!

So I finished Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

You'll remember in my previous post I was almost finished with it and I was afraid I could see what was coming...and let me say I didn't like what I saw.

ALAS! She did not go where I thought she was going! And I must say I'm glad. This is a semi-spoiler alert for those of you reading the book...but Tully does not sleep with Johnny after he and Kate are married. I just KNEW it was setting it up for that and that was going to be greatly disappointing. While I like Tully, I was getting a little sick of her always getting everything she wanted with Kate standing there in the background.

So KUDOS to you Kristin Hannah: for writing a good, unpredictable story.

Sick girl=Reading days

My precious girl is sick and has been basically running a fever for 5 days now.

So, last night I went to the bookstore and purchased GRACELING which I spoke of in my previous post and a book I found on Amazon when I was researching Graceling (You know how they show other books you may be interested in?) called Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. I'm so excited to start both of them! But FIRST I have to finish the book I am currently reading: Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

This is the first book of hers I have read. It's good, but not spectacular. It does have it's good moments, however, I just keep hoping it isn't going to turn out the way I keep thinking it's heading. I don't like my books to be predictable. I like it when something shows up out of left field and you say "I never saw that coming! I never thought of that!". In the case of this book, I would be happy to just get it tied up into a nice ending without something tragic happening. Sadly, I don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully I will be able to finish it this afternoon (this is the one good thing of being stuck at home with a sick child)and I can post my thoughts on it. Because I know you're all anxiously awaiting MY review!

Nothing new here but the books

Nothing new to blog about, but since I promised to try to blog on a more regular basis, here we go!

The latest book I read was by James Patterson. As with all of her books, this was a great romantic suspense novel. I was about half-way through the book when I realized I had read it before, but that really makes no difference. A good book is always a good book.

I'm also reading a Warrior Cat book with my daughter. She was having some trouble getting into the book, so I told her I would read it with her. She really wants to finish it because it's worth 18 Reading Counts points at school...and we all know how important Reading Counts points are!!! Since I came in half-way through Chapter 8, I have some catching up to do, but it's an interesting read. As many of you know due to the weather I've been stuck at home. Since January 1 I have read 5 books. Here is a basic run-down:

#1: City of Glass by Cassandra Clare If you have not read any of this series, I HIGHLY suggest it! This is the third and final book in The Mortal Instruments trilogy. OMG! These are GREAT. If you are a Twilight fan and have been looking for something to read, this is it. There are Vampires, Werewolves, etc. You can check it all out here: www.mortalinstruments.com

#2: Might as well laugh about it now by Marie Osmond. I love Marie Osmond. I have loved her since I was a little girl and let me tell you, after reading her book, I love her more. She is someone I would love to just sit and visit with. The book is VERY good, especially for any Osmond fans out there.

#3: Guilty by Karen Robards. If you have not read any Karen Robards books...READ THEM. She is one of my "go-to" authors. You know, you want something to read, not really sure what you're looking for...pick up one of her books in the library or book store of your choice. They are wonderful romantic suspense novels.

#4: A Season of Gifts by Richard Peck. If you love children or young adult literature, you love Richard Peck. This is a companion book to "A Year Down Yonder" and "A Long Way From Chicago". I love Grandma Dowdel and I love this book. Since this is a children's book, it's a fast read for any adult, but it will make you laugh out loud.

#5: Envy by Anna Godbersen. OK young adult literature fans. If you have not read "The Luxe" series, what in the world are you waiting for??? These books are so much fun! My only regret is not having all 4 of them before I started reading them. I do not like waiting for the next book! For those of you who are not aware of this series, it's Gossip Girl of the 1890's. And it's wonderful! You can check them out here: www.theluxebooks.com

So there are the first 5 books of the year. My goal is to read 75 books. For the past several years I've had a goal of 100, and have failed to make it every year. So, this year I dropped it to 75...we'll see what happens.

Let me know your thoughts...any good books I need to be reading? What's on your reading list?

Still alive

Amazingly, even though I have not TOUCHED the blog is MONTHS (ok, a year...or more) it is still here and I still remembered my password! Will miracles never cease? So, maybe I should make it my new year resolution to blog more consistently??? I don't know if that will happen...but today is a nice, cold, icy day...so I'm at home and since I updated my LinkedIn info, I thought I might need to check on this and update it as well.

The main information is Lea Ann has a facebook page. So check her out if you get a chance or if you are a facebook addict.

I think maybe as a way to get me to blog more consistently, when I am searching for things to blog about since this is for my fellow Afton Alums...I will blog about the books I am reading. I know not all of you are readers out there. But if you know me, you know I love a good book. So, we'll see how that turns out.

As always, if I have interesting news to report....and I mean NEWS, not GOSSIP. I'll do it on here. I mean hey, I did already mention Lea's facebook page. Did everyone know Lea and I are now working together? It's just like old times.

I know, I'm a slacker

It's been almost a month since the last post...and as the title says, I know, I'm a slacker. I haven't put on all the pics from the reunion, but hopefully I will get to that this coming weekend. It is Fall Break, so maybe I'll have some time to get some of those things done.

As many of you know, Lea Ann's dad passed away shortly after the reunion. There were quite a few of us at the family visitation/funeral.

A couple of weeks ago I ran into Carla. Isn't it funny how we don't see each other for YEARS, have the reunion and then start seeing each other???

So, until next post...pictures are coming, I promise. I'm just adding a couple of pics for now, will add more later. If you have pictures from last night, email them to me and I'll get them posted. I'm proud to say that no one did anything to be ashamed of that you have to worry about me putting pics of on the blog.

There were 17 of us there (18 if you count Garret who was there via phone---hate to see that cell phone bill, Jerry!) Not too bad out of a class of 44. For those of you who were not present, here's a who's who list of attendees: Paula, Bryce, Carla, Jeannie, Clinton, Mikey, Larry, Gayle, Heath, Justin, Kenny, Jerry, Janet, Lea Ann, John, Brent and Chris. Of course, we all talked to Garret on the phone and Sarge showed up to visit.

So, does anyone want to volunteer to be in charge of the 25th? Do we want to do a 25th or wait until 30? Remember to use the blog or www.alumniclass.com/afton to help us keep track of everyone. I thought the turnout was great for us to have just called/emailed and not sent out tons of invitations and RSVP cards. If there is something you would like done differently, shoot me an email or leave a comment here and we'll see what we can do to for the next one. I am going to find my yearbook and post who our class officers were (since not everyone seems to remember).

Classmates everywhere!

Last night at the Grove High School football game, I ran in to Charlie and Bryce. Geez, it doesn't seem like we have been out of school for 20 years.

I heard from Paula today and she said the new "cafetorium" at good ole' AHS is reserved for us for Saturday 1:00 to 3:00. This will be a time for everyone to bring the kiddos and sit around and visit. Someone may have to be in charge of pictures for me to post on the blog later, as I'm not sure I will be able to make it. I have a crazy week next week (I know most of you don't really care, but I'm writing this, so I can say what I want.) I'll be at North Central Accreditation meetings on Monday and Tuesday, then Friday is Band Homecoming (where my child is going to be flower girl) so I'll have that craziness all day Friday and Friday night. Saturday will be dance class... for my child, not me...so I'll just have to see if I can manage to swing by Afton America in the afternoon, but I will definitely be a Shebang's Saturday night.

Paula also said that Heath will be flying in and she thinks Geir is going to try to make it as well. I haven't heard from Garret on whether he will be able to make it or not since he was transferred to El Paso. As always, if you're reading this, leave a comment and let us know if you are going to show up or know of someone who will.

Hopefully everyone is seeing the info in the newspapers. Paula has been the track-down QUEEN. Seriously Paula, maybe you should take up private investigating as a part time job!
Hopefully by next week, info will be in the papers. I'm probably only going to put it in The Grove Sun, The American and The Miami News Record. I figure those will be the ones that will most likely catch the eye of an alum or family member. If you know of a classmate, make sure they get the word about the reunion.
